Why I Love The Online World

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

The first time I mentioned Twitter to someone in real life, they laughed and called me a geek. They asked me “Why would someone want to know when you go pee or what you had for breakfast?” I then tried to explain what Twitter was all about. They so did not get it. They were like its a waste of time. I don’t have time for such nonsense and blah blah blah. I’m not going to argue about it with someone who never even gave twitter a chance so I stepped away and just nodded and walked away. Like pfft whatever, you don’t know what you’re missing, dude.

It’s just so much easier to get advice about anything from complete strangers. Well, not complete strangers. Its just people are less judgemental online sometimes when you ask them what you should do when your toddler won’t go potty in her potty chair and there’s bound to be someone who totally and completely relates to you and knows exactly what you’re going through. Now let’s say you call up someone from your family or a family friend for the same advice, they’ll probably tell þyou that you’re not trying hard enough even though you sat on the ground next to your adorable weepy toddlertill she went potty. Twitter is so much more understanding.

And friendships just form so easily on Twitter. Its like instant friends when you search something up and see people thinking the same exact thing about that particular something or someone. Like recently I did a @landonpigg search on twitter and someone was like professing their love to him via twitter. Its like the new fan mail! Save the trees, people! For example, @rewritingkel. We haven’t met in real life yet, but we joke and laugh about the same things like her cooking penis (its not really what you think) but we just GET each other. There are sooo many friendships like this on twitter and in the blogworld.

Someday, you’ll read (or have already) read a blog post on a blog and just cry and cry and cry because you’re going through the same thing or have been though it. Its just magical how you stumble onto a blog post and find your bloggy soul mate or whatever you call it. People bond. Amazing friendships are formed. And many words are exchanged back and forth between them. Friends who you exchange cell phone numbers to always be a text away. @E_Rizzle and @MissMope have been my lifeline many times. As well as @rewritingkel. These girls keep me from losing my mind some days. And I’m forever grateful that they’re my friends.

Its not just the friendships that are formed.. Its the kindness of strangers, the love, the compassion. The way people come together to help a cause. Like recently @QueenofSpain’s kid decided to raise money with their original drawings to help out the turtles from the Gulf. And just very recently (yesterday) the whole internet donated 25 THOUSAND dollars to #tutusfortanner. This is the compassion I’m talking about. The love. And @wwbjhd is running the #blogher5k and he’s running for Tanner until he collapses. And people are donating for every 5K he finishes. See? Kindness. Generosity. People coming together for a good cause. Now tell me things like this don’t warm your heart.

The awesome @missdjm let me use her replies to me talking about twitter and why I love it

Here, There, and Everywhere

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

It’s everywhere. Your family member who is always starting some crap. Your former friend who always threatened suicide because things didn’t go her way. The lady at the store throwing a hissy fit because you grabbed something she was thinking of getting but you beat her to it. Someone on tv having 14 kids so she wouldn’t feel lonely. Someone online lying about a baby that never existed and starting a donation page. Someone on tv making a ‘weather balloon’ and claiming their kid was in there but wasn’t.

When I was in a community for moms, one that rhymes with pate and ends with mom, I was the target of drama. It got to the point that I had to make a new screen name and the drama still followed me. As hooked as I was to that site, I had to make a choice, and leave it. I got hurt so many times by people whom I thought were my friends, and close ones even. Of course I made many new friendships some of whom I still talk to like @E_Rizzle and @MissMope. {You will see that on occasion, like on email or one of one of my blog posts I refer to people as @ their screen name on twitter but that’s how awesome twitter is}

My point is that no matter how hard you try to walk away from drama, you’re always going to run into it {or find it} somewhere else. Its never going to go away because believe it or not, (some) people need drama in their lives like we need oxygen. Its like a craving, like that caramel machiatto or those curly fries.

Now I’m craving curly fries, is jack I n the box still open at 11pm?

Who Said Online RPG Aren't Romantic?

Monday, August 10th, 2009

I know what you’re thinking. Posting twice in the same day *gasp* How could you, Pamela? Hey but to me that meme post counted as sunday’s blog post!

Hi, my name’s Tatiana, and Pamela and I have a few things in common.

1) We’re both lovely.
2) We both have daughters.
3) We both use Twitter.
4) We’re both married to geeks.

Let me tell you a little about my geek, Chris.  When we started chatting, he lived outside of Toronto and I lived in Connecticut.  We did not meet through an online dating service — no, we were much too geeky for that.

We met in an online role-playing game.

Oh yes.  A TEXT-BASED game, even.  We worked as staff there.  He coded, I wrote storylines… it’s all very romantic. Trust me.  Coders and writers exist in two separate geek worlds that are nearly magnetically opposed to one another, yet collide on occasion.

In May 2008, Chris and I collided and made a baby girl, Maia, who is six months old now.  This has led to ENDLESS geek jokes, most related to our years as World of Warcraft players.

As she sat screaming at a toy:
Me – “Wow honey, she’s definitely your daughter.  That’s how you sound when you get killed in PvP.”

As he held her standing on his lap:
Me – “You know what’s weird?  She’s like 24 inches tall.  That’s gnome-sized.”
Him – “Gnomes have big heads, just like her.  I can see that.”

As she snuck up on one of our dogs:
Him – “Watch out!  Maia’s stealthed, she’s gonna ambush you!”

And the ultimate:

@AVeryGoodYear

A murloc being, of course:

murloc

Now c’mon, tell me that’s not the best Halloween costume for a baby ever!

You can stalk Tatiana on Twitter, read her blog and check out the new site she just launched recently for moms!
