Why I Love The Online World

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

The first time I mentioned Twitter to someone in real life, they laughed and called me a geek. They asked me “Why would someone want to know when you go pee or what you had for breakfast?” I then tried to explain what Twitter was all about. They so did not get it. They were like its a waste of time. I don’t have time for such nonsense and blah blah blah. I’m not going to argue about it with someone who never even gave twitter a chance so I stepped away and just nodded and walked away. Like pfft whatever, you don’t know what you’re missing, dude.

It’s just so much easier to get advice about anything from complete strangers. Well, not complete strangers. Its just people are less judgemental online sometimes when you ask them what you should do when your toddler won’t go potty in her potty chair and there’s bound to be someone who totally and completely relates to you and knows exactly what you’re going through. Now let’s say you call up someone from your family or a family friend for the same advice, they’ll probably tell þyou that you’re not trying hard enough even though you sat on the ground next to your adorable weepy toddlertill she went potty. Twitter is so much more understanding.

And friendships just form so easily on Twitter. Its like instant friends when you search something up and see people thinking the same exact thing about that particular something or someone. Like recently I did a @landonpigg search on twitter and someone was like professing their love to him via twitter. Its like the new fan mail! Save the trees, people! For example, @rewritingkel. We haven’t met in real life yet, but we joke and laugh about the same things like her cooking penis (its not really what you think) but we just GET each other. There are sooo many friendships like this on twitter and in the blogworld.

Someday, you’ll read (or have already) read a blog post on a blog and just cry and cry and cry because you’re going through the same thing or have been though it. Its just magical how you stumble onto a blog post and find your bloggy soul mate or whatever you call it. People bond. Amazing friendships are formed. And many words are exchanged back and forth between them. Friends who you exchange cell phone numbers to always be a text away. @E_Rizzle and @MissMope have been my lifeline many times. As well as @rewritingkel. These girls keep me from losing my mind some days. And I’m forever grateful that they’re my friends.

Its not just the friendships that are formed.. Its the kindness of strangers, the love, the compassion. The way people come together to help a cause. Like recently @QueenofSpain’s kid decided to raise money with their original drawings to help out the turtles from the Gulf. And just very recently (yesterday) the whole internet donated 25 THOUSAND dollars to #tutusfortanner. This is the compassion I’m talking about. The love. And @wwbjhd is running the #blogher5k and he’s running for Tanner until he collapses. And people are donating for every 5K he finishes. See? Kindness. Generosity. People coming together for a good cause. Now tell me things like this don’t warm your heart.

The awesome @missdjm let me use her replies to me talking about twitter and why I love it

Being Myself

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

My friend Lex said something on twitter.. Something I’ve been dealing with for quite a while.. About not blogging about something she’s been wanting to blog about because of someone stumbling into your private space. I’m going through the same thing. I wish it was easy (and free) to change domain names and switch everything at godaddy and siteground… So this is my dilemma.

You may have noticed that I’m a total different person here than on Twitter. On twitter, I’m more open and talk about a lot of things… Pretty much everything but as soon as I get here.. There are some barriers.. Or fliters that I have to setup. I have no idea why I do this. I mean I shouldn’t care if a family member or family friend stumble into my personal space here, right? I mean its my space, I pay for my own domain, they don’t pay for it. It shouldn’t matter right? Le sigh.

Sometimes {most of the time} I don’t feel like my own self when I write here. I don’t have the freedom a lot of you do… because 1) my family often reads my blog 2) I don’t like them (and when I say them… Is family who don’t talk to me on a regular basis and who is just snooping in my life) reading my private thoughts. This is my space. My space to be myself. And I’m scared to talk about the things that are really bothering me. Crazy, right? I mean I’m paying for this and I don’t say what I want? That’s some bull, isn’t it?

So I’ve decided that either a) I’m going to just not care if they read or not .. or b) open up a new blog. A blog of my very own private thoughts.. opened to the public without anyone knowing who I am.. Who its being written by… Or who is the crazy person who hits publish. I mean.. I know I have tumblr and posterous but I miss my old blog. The one I took forever making a header for… The blog that held so many private entries. I have another blog on blogger that I hardly ever update.. also because its connected to my email so anyone who googles my email address can probably find it on the first page results.

So my question is.. What I want to know is.. How do you deal with relatives or super close family friends stumbling onto your blog? Do you go and hide (like me) and stop posting for a while and hope they will leave the little piece of the internet that is solely yours or something else?

What Am I Doing?

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Just an update so you guys don’t think I’ve died or something. For those of you who don’t follow me on Twitter (do it now) wouldn’t know about my internet withdrawals caused by my other half (husband). Since he just accidentally forgot to pay the at&t u-verse bill. Very convenient, huh? Well, yes I lived through those 4 crazy days without Noggin and Nick Jr. to keep my toddler from climbing the walls. It was pretty insane but now Natalie is even more a Beatles fan than ever. She watched Yellow Submarine like 37,456,345,293,852 times and kept on saying “again, again, againnnn!” so I can’t say no.

So right now I started reading another book (because I finished reading Time Traveler’s Wife) and the name of it is The BlackBerry Diaries. I get to review it on my blog yey! I’m on page 56 at the moment but I’ll let you know when I finish it! So far, it’s hilarious and I can totally relate to Kathy Buckworth! About Time Traveler’s Wife, if you haven’t read it, go buy it right now and start reading it. Go. I’ll be here. It will confuse you at first.. It’s like a roller coaster.. It’s cute, mushy, happy, depressing, happy, and depressing, and a sad/happy ending. I totally cried and now I have @whymomdrinksrum reading it now!

Don’t forget that the contest is still open (until tomorrow) so enter enter enter! You can still win. It’s really really cute and so so good. The contest is to win a Wanchai Ferry Prize Pack with a coupon so you can try Orange Chicken for free. So totally easy to make and tastes even better than that Stir-Fry place down the street from you! Again, contest will be open until tomorrow and the winner will be picked on 09/03 or earlier if no one else enter.. Haha.

Oh and I’m also going to be a Volunteer for Boobie-thon ’09 on October 2nd for two hours! I’m a volunteer photo editor (just like Heidi!) This is what a volunteer photo editor gets to do: A photo editor will be responsible for editing photo submissions. You will receive access to the photo submission email address and then download photos that are submitted and run them against a small checklist of requirements. Then you pass these photos on to a photo coordinator who publishes them to the Boobie-Thon website.
